Enzootic Abortion of Ewes what is it?

Enzootic Abortion of Ewes (EAE), is caused by the bacteria Chlamydophila abortus. It is the most commonly diagnosed cause of abortion in UK sheep1, costing the UK sheep industry up to £20 million annually2.

Infection is primarily spread through the aborted material and reproductive fluids of infected ewes, and bacteria can be shed for up
to 3 weeks after abortion3.

There are many potential ways that EAE infection can enter a flock4:

Bought in/replacement ewes

Environment (the bacteria can last weeks in cold conditions)
Neighbouring flocks (if grazing adjoining land)
Wildlife
Escaped sheep

These reports are based on testing done through our Assure Ewe programme in 2019/20. In reality, the true number of EAE abortions and cases on farm may be much higher and widespread.

What can you do to help protect your farm?

Testing

Ewes can be tested for Chlamydia within 3 months of lambing. Contact the practice for more information.

Vaccination

Vaccination along with strict biosecurity is the best protection against the impact of EAE, and can be done from 4 months to 4 weeks prior to tupping.
