Enzootic Abortion of Ewes what is it?
Enzootic Abortion of Ewes (EAE), is caused by the bacteria Chlamydophila abortus. It is the most commonly diagnosed cause of abortion in UK sheep1, costing the UK sheep industry up to £20 million annually2.
Infection is primarily spread through the aborted material and reproductive fluids of infected ewes, and bacteria can be shed for up
to 3 weeks after abortion3.
There are many potential ways that EAE infection can enter a flock4:
Bought in/replacement ewes
Environment (the bacteria can last weeks in cold conditions)
Neighbouring flocks (if grazing adjoining land)
Wildlife
Escaped sheep
Estimated cost per abortion £85
Check the map to see cases tested positive in your area
Ceva offer farm testing for Chlamydophila abortus. Positive cases of EAE on farms are recorded by county on the map right.
Check the number of cases in your area by clicking on your county
Keep checking back as we update the results regularly.
These reports are based on testing done through our Assure Ewe programme in 2019/20. In reality, the true number of EAE abortions and cases on farm may be much higher and widespread.
If there are no cases shown in your county, or you think there are cases not shown, check also with your vet.
What can you do to help protect your farm?
Testing
Ewes can be tested for Chlamydia within 3 months of lambing. Contact the practice for more information.
Vaccination
Vaccination along with strict biosecurity is the best protection against the impact of EAE, and can be done from 4 months to 4 weeks prior to tupping.
